The United Way of Rome and Floyd County had some big goals for the 2007-08 campaign.
After reaching them, the organization has even more ambitious plans for 2008-09.
The United Way had its annual meeting Wednesday morning at the Boys & Girls Club of Rome, with its theme of “Every One Counts.”
The meeting not only recognized the efforts of several people, including board members and the incoming president and campaign chair, but it also featured the announcement of the United Way’s fundraising goal for this coming year.
Ron Tomlinson, the organization’s past president, said the United Way raised $1,242,408 last year, exceeding the campaign goal of $1.23 million. However, new campaign chair Steven McDowell has even higher expectations for next year.
“I think in order to achieve dreams, you must set high goals and surround yourselves with great people,” McDowell said. “I want to challenge you today to help us raise $1.5 million this coming year.
“This community is full of folks who have the heart and a real desire to serve others,” McDowell added. “They realize that what is done today truly affects tomorrow. To be able to give back to those in the community is a very rewarding thing.”
Tomlinson welcomed new United Way board president Randy Quick, and he also praised the efforts of last year’s campaign chair, Brenda Waltz.
“I’m proud of the accomplishments of the United Way and the successful campaigns we’ve had,” Tomlinson said. “And I think there’s huge potential and opportunity for us to do even more.”
Tomlinson also said he is proud of his time as the United Way president.
“I believe if you keep doing good things, it will make a real difference,” Tomlinson said. “This has been so gratifying, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.”
Quick emphasized the diversity of the projects the United Way helps sponsor, and he said he’s excited about McDowell’s ambitious fundraising goals.
“Quality of life in a community is a key to its survival. It’s what makes people stay,” Quick said. “Rome and Floyd County have a great quality of life.
The United Way also gave the Hugh Burns Spirit Award to George Reynolds, who is a board member and volunteer at the Rebecca Blaylock Child Development Center.
Two new board members, Tina Waggoner and Mike Page, were also announced, along with the organization’s updated Web site at www.uwrome.org.
